In the past few years I have been able to guess what will come in the year ahead, but for 2012 I feel less sure. Smartphones and tablets have been the main drivers for the past 2 years and to consider what will be big in 2012 requires some serious imagination stretching.
Mobile payments seem to be a popular prediction from many mobile sites, but I am not convinced this feature will become commonplace within 12 months. There are so many hurdles that need to be overcome and so many security considerations that I don’t believe it will take hold. Throw in the fact that money is tight for many and it feels like a ‘nice to have’ technology that does not offer a serious practical benefit or enough emotional pull to become popular.
Wearable technology would seem to be a logical jump from the smartphones we use today and I can see some impressive products coming from Apple and Google by the end of the year. I don’t believe we will just see improved iPads, Android tablets and smartphones without something new emerging. The market needs impetuous to continue its growth and this is an obvious area to explore. It has huge emotional impact and tremendous practical benefits as well, and could be huge if done right.
More obvious expectations are a higher resolution iPad 3, better Android tablets running Ice Cream Sandwich and the next version of Android, LTE smartphones with acceptable battery life and even more integration between devices and platforms. Maybe we will see one instant messaging solution that becomes dominant on all platforms, an area that RIM should surely explore, or maybe Google will do even more with its services and gain an even tighter grip of the online service market. Maybe, maybe, maybe…
2012 is intriguing because there isn’t s definitive technology or feature that people are expecting, but rather improvements on current technology and minimal new features. Maybe the flexible screen will arrive, maybe smartphones or tablets running desktop operating systems. Maybe, maybe, maybe…
