The Retina display on the new iPad has been drooled over, discussed and received as the second coming by many users. It is without doubt one of the best displays ever to grace any computer and offers advantages for a number of tasks.
However, is it a step too far? Take a look at the image above which was taken on an iPad 2 in unnatural light. It looks great doesn’t it? And exactly like a book. You see, real nooks have imperfections and other factors that make them feel like real books. If they looked digitised, they would not feel like real books at all and would instead lose some of their natural qualities that help to make us enjoy them so much.
The display on the new iPad takes away all of these perfections and offers an experience that feels very, very digitised. Zoom in as far as you can on an iPad 2 and try to see some pixels. You won’t, but you do get a natural feeling when reading text. For photos, games and many other tasks, the Retina display is verging on breathtaking, but for reading it has some way to do. A step too far? Possibly.

good site! thanks!
thanks for informative post. i am pleased sure this post has helped me save many hours of browsing other similar posts just to find what i was looking for.
this is perfect, i am looking to do something similar very soon and this article makes perfect sense.
I think this is a step too far for some but not for others. I like what Apple did with the MacBook let the user decide. If they wanted to keep iPad cost down to Android level there is a way to go for the iPad range also. Apple need to control cost it is their biggest weakness in the market place. Google and MS have good products much cheaper. These bad times could go on for a decade so Apple need to think of cost much more now – not just trust people will buy. A way to do this is to be more flexible as they displayed, no pun intended, in the recent updates.
