Android v iOS: does it really matter?

The web is full of discussions comparing smartphone platforms, and in particular the comparison of iOS and Android. They are very different in how they work, but so similar in what they do and the discussions (often arguments) are largely pointless.

When you think about both operating systems, you start to realise that the general gist of what they do is identical; apps, organisation, navigation, entertainment and communication. It is ‘how’ they do things that sets them apart-

Android

Not 100% silky smooth, but pretty close on high-end devices.

Offers full customisation, themes and hacks.

Many free apps and games.

More form factors available.

iOS

Smooth interface.

Limited with regards to customisation and ability to personalise the experience.

Apps tend to be slightly more expensive on average.

iOS and Android

The best selling apps and games are available on both platforms.

They both offer compatibility with popular services such as Dropbox, Google etc.

Both operating systems work on smartphones and tablets.

No matter how you look at both operating systems, they are similar in many more ways that they are different and the differences are really not as great as some sections of the media would like to make out. No matter what modern smartphone you own, the experience will be positive and you will soon wonder how you ever lived without it. If you are using a feature phone and are considering a smartphone, jump on board and enjoy the experience.
